Israel Independence Day is celebrated annually, according to the Hebrew calendar, on 5 Iyar, the anniversary of the establishment of the State of Israel. As this date falls this year on the Sabbath, celebrations have been moved up to Thursday, May 8 (3 Iyar). The day preceding this celebration is devoted to the memory of those who gave their lives for the achievement of the country's independence and its continued existence. The Celebrations to commemorate this event were marked in various countries that the Embassy in Nairobi is accredited to. Here in Nairobi, the Ambassador hosted a colourful reception at the National Museums of Kenya to mark the event. Among the people who graced the occasion included the Minister of State for National Heritage and Culture Hon. William Ntimama and the Director of Culture Mr. Silverse Anami. Mr Yair Dalal a renowned Israeli composer, oudist, and violinist was in attendance at the invitation of the Embassy and he entertained all those who were present. Dalal later made various presentations including visiting and performing for a primary school at the Viwandani area. Similar events were held in Uganda where the Chief Guest at the ceremony was Hon. Oryem Henry okello who is the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. Tanzania’s Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Hon. Mathias Chikawe was the chief guest at the celebrations in Dar Es Salaam while the Hon. Ronnie Shikapwasha graced the event in Lusaka, Zambia. |
