Israeli Jewish freedom fighters that were prisoners at the British Internment Camp at Gilgil Kenya in the 1940s visited Kenya for the first time in 65 years. The Israeli Broadcasting Authority (I.B.A Channel 1) made a documentary film about the visit. The 10 surviving Israeli detainees were accompanied by their families and relatives of other detainees who did not live to see this day. Upon the establishment of the State of Israel (May,1948) and their release, some of these freedom fighters later became prominent figures such as Generals, Members of Parliament, Ministers etc.

On arrival at the camp site (now Military Gilgil Camp) they toured the place, searched and found the hidden tunnels through which some managed to escape. They were hosted for lunch at Ambassador Jacob Keidar’s residence, which was well attended by some government officials before leaving for Israel.

82yrs old Mr. Pakter is Holocaust survivor who attended the UN Holocaust day

The Holocaust also known as “Ha’Shoah” is the genocide of approximately six million Jews during World War II, a programmed and systematic state-sponsored extermination by Nazi Germany. Concentration and extermination camps were established across Europe in which inmates were used as slave labor until they died of hunger, exhaustion or diseases. Jews were confined in overcrowded ghettos before being transported by freight train to extermination camps where, if they survived the journey, they acquired a BADGE for identity, the majority of them were murdered in gas chambers and then cremated. Every arm of Nazi Germany's bureaucracy was involved in the logistics of the mass murder, turning the country into a genocidal state.

The Jews who survived the Holocaust said the World must know so that the same does not happen again. Mr. Ezra Pakter is a survivor, who gave his moving story to a crowd of more than 500 people, in the ceremony of International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27, 2010 at the UN offices in Nairobi and worldwide.

In attendance was the Director General of UNEP and UN office in Nairobi UNON), Mr. Achim Steiner, Israeli Ambassador H.E. Jacob Keidar, in his SPEECH taught the children a lesson of how to help anybody in need. German Ambassador H.E. Margit Hellwig-Boette declared that Germany is committed to the remembrance of the atrocities done by Nazi Germany, and Dr. David Silverstein ,representing of the Jewish community in Kenya, finished with the words “Al Tishkach” meaning “We must never forget”.

The ceremony ended with a moment of silence, and by everyone viewing an exhibition that was unveiled at the entrance showing real photographs and real stories of the Holocaust.
